Upcoming exhibition:
Georg NEES 100
The exhibition marking the 100th birthday of computer art pioneer Georg Nees will
open on June 23, 2026 at the gallery's new art space Dollmannstr. 15 in Munich.
Georg Nees (1926–2016) was one of the great pioneers of digital art. Nees had studied mathematics, physics, and philosophy; he wrote his doctoral thesis, »Generative Computergraphik« (1969), under Max Bense, the influential philosopher of the Stuttgart School.
Nees generated his first computer graphics in 1964; in 1965, he exhibited his works at the Studien–Galerie of the University of Stuttgart. Organized by Max Bense, this exhibition is considered the first digital art exhibition in Europe and ranks among the most significant early exhibitions of computer art worldwide.
The artist was a Siemens man: Over the course of his career, Nees was not only a digital expert and head of the data center in Erlangen, but—around 1970—he also engaged intensively with computer art, creating innovative graphics for the corporation and for various editions. Quite a few of his computer graphics are today considered iconic motifs of early digital art.
On the occasion of Georg Nees's 100th birthday, the Heike Werner Galerie presents—in the opening exhibition of its new art space—early prints created between 1964 and 1972 by this extraordinary digital artist.
